Volcán Bluffs Nature Center

UNM Instructor : Geoffrey Adams
Term: Fall 2023

Nestled near Albuquerque, the nature center mirrors the rise of the Sandia Mountains and the ancient volcanic formations of the earth to celebrate the environment's beauty. The nature center's architecture seamlessly rises from the ground harmonizing human design with natural design. At the heart of the center is a courtyard, echoing the grandeur of the Rio Grande valley. The petroglyph’s native flora forms a living tapestry. The west and east wings symbolize the valley’s duality; the west highlights arid landscapes akin to the Petroglyphs while the east embraces the lush, verdant environment of the Rio Grande valley. Aside from honoring the natural landscape, the nature center frames views and invites exploration through the area's diverse landscapes. The design stands as a representation of the balance between human innovation and the natural formation and habitat of the current valley ecosystems.
